Navigating Winter Woes
2/13/2024 (Permalink)
As winter tightens its grip, SERVPRO Team Caldwell is here with essential tips to help you navigate the challenges that the season brings. February is the perfect time to address winter-related issues and ensure your home remains a warm and safe haven. Join us as we share insights into winter home maintenance to keep your property in top shape.
Protecting Pipes from Freezing: With plummeting temperatures, frozen pipes become a concern. Insulate exposed pipes, especially in unheated areas like basements and attics. Dripping faucets can also prevent freezing. If you're planning to be away, consider shutting off the water supply and draining the pipes.
Gutter Maintenance: Clogged gutters can lead to ice dams, causing water to seep into your home. Regularly clean gutters and remove debris to ensure proper drainage. Installing gutter guards can also be a valuable investment in preventing clogs.
Checking for Roof Leaks: Heavy snow and ice accumulation can lead to roof leaks. Inspect your roof for any signs of damage, missing shingles, or leaks. Addressing these issues promptly can prevent water damage to your home's interior.
Winterizing Outdoor Faucets: To prevent frozen pipes and potential water damage, disconnect garden hoses and use insulated faucet covers on outdoor spigots. Consider shutting off outdoor water supplies if not in use during the winter months.
Heating System Maintenance: Ensure your heating system is in top condition by scheduling a professional inspection. Replace filters regularly, and consider upgrading to a programmable thermostat to optimize energy efficiency.
Sealing Drafts and Insulation: Keep the warmth inside by sealing drafts around windows and doors. Check for gaps or cracks and use weatherstripping or caulk to seal them. Adequate insulation in attics and walls can also significantly reduce heating costs.
Snow and Ice Removal: Regularly remove snow and ice from walkways, driveways, and the roof. Use a snow blower or shovel to prevent slips and falls. Clearing snow from your roof can prevent ice dams and the associated water damage.
Emergency Preparedness: Equip your home with essential emergency supplies, including flashlights, batteries, and an emergency kit. Be prepared for power outages by having alternative heating sources and a plan in place.

Beware of Blackberry Winters
3/24/2022 (Permalink)
Around this time of year, from late April to mid-May, we begin to enjoy the increasingly warmer temperatures, but then, occasionally, a cold snap occurs. Here in the South, we call this brief period of frost and cold weather “blackberry winters.” This time of year, blackberries are in full bloom, and the sudden drop in temperatures during a blackberry winter kills the berry bushes as well as other plants. Blackberry winters are a threat to most farmers growing new plants and homeowners that just bought new plants. However, a sudden frost can cause more problems than covering plants.
In the past, forecasts show temperatures dropping into the low 30s during blackberry winters. As tired as we are worrying about frozen pipes, blackberry winters that occur overnight can lead to water damage in your home. The cooler temperatures can also have you reaching for your space heaters, electric blankets, and your fireplace for one last use before spring hits and temperatures rise. Practice proper fire safety and watch the weather for predicted frosts. Plan accordingly for these sudden declines in temperature, and remember to leave cabinet doors open so warm air can surround your pipes.
Being mindful of blackberry winters, not only saves you from potentially losing those beautiful new plants you just put out on the porch, but also saves you a lot of money in damages to your property. If you find yourself facing a water or fire disaster after a blackberry winter, call SERVPRO of Jackson/Crockett County at 731-423-9944. We are “Faster to any size disaster” and are “Here to help.”
How To Prepare For a Flood
3/14/2022 (Permalink)
When a natural disaster causes a state of emergency to be declared, SERVPRO franchises from across the nation come together for what we call STORM. Over the years, SERVPRO has responded to different natural disasters. One of the natural disasters SERVPRO responds to, in particular, is flood damage situations. Unfortunately, floods are one of the most common natural disasters in our country, and many people are not familiar with flood safety. Listed below is a list of seven tips to remember when preparing for a flood.
Before A Flood…
Are You In A Flood Zone?
Preparation for floods starts before you purchase a home. Potential homeowners should know if their home is within FEMA’s flood zone. For current homeowners who don’t know whether or not their home is in a flood zone, you can check online through the FEMA flood map.
Make Sure You Have Flood Insurance!
Whether you live in a FEMA-designated flood zone or not, it is important to invest in flood insurance. Home insurance does not protect against flood damage. If your home is at medium or high risk for flooding, it is even more crucial that you purchase food insurance. Once you have purchased flood insurance, it is important to remember that it does not go into effect until 30 days after the purchase date. Having the necessary coverage is better to have than to not before the weather takes a turn for the worst.
Evacuate If It’s Mandatory or Necessary
If major flooding is predicted for your area, it is extremely important to keep up with your local weather stations for evacuation updates. If an evacuation is ordered, you should evacuate immediately. Evacuation orders are put in place to protect you. If a disaster occurs and an evacuation for your area has been announced, this means that first responders will not be able to travel into your area and help you in an emergency.
Gather Safety Supplies
If a mandatory evacuation has not been announced yet, gather enough supplies to keep you and your family safe for at least one week. These items include drinking water and non-perishable food for your entire family. Batteries, dry clothes, blankets, and medication are other supplies that should be stored in a location high enough that minor floodwaters won’t reach.
Place sandbags in front of all exterior doors. The sand absorbs water and is the best way to keep minor floodwaters from entering your home.
Relocate Valuables to Higher Ground
Floods can be very unpredictable. SERVPRO highly recommends you move any valuable belongings to your attic or second floor to your home. Items such as TVs, electronics, and anything else of value should all be relocated to higher ground.
Protect Important Documents
To ensure important documents are not lost to water damage during a flood, keep all your insurance papers, social security cards, and passports in a waterproof container. This will also save you a ton of time if flooding does occur in your home.
Clear Your Gutters
Cleaning out your gutters before heavy rain is expected to roll through, will help prevent your home from sustaining water damage. During intense rain, gutters and downspouts can become backed up and can cause serious damage. To keep unwanted debris from clogging up your gutters and drains, gutter guards are a good investment to consider.
Floods: What To Do & What Not To Do
3/14/2022 (Permalink)
While preventing floodwaters from entering your home is difficult, it is important to know what to do and what not to do during a flood. If you take these 3 tips seriously, you and your family will have a better chance of staying safe when a flood occurs.
Don’t Walk or Drive Through Floodwaters
Stay away from areas that may be underwater in your area. Walking or driving through floodwater is extremely dangerous because you never know how deep the water actually is until it is too late. Not matter how well of a swimmer you are, there is always the danger of drowning as well. The best way to stay safe from floodwaters is just to avoid them entirely.
Floodwaters Could Contain…
- Dangerous Debris
- Electrical Currents From Fallen Power Lines
- Hidden Sinkholes
- Excessive water causes the ground to become soft and soggy
- Roads may become washed out under the flood water.
Avoid Bridges
Bridges that extend across running water, regardless of how high or low the water normally is, should be avoided. Flood waters move quickly and it is hard to predict when an influx of water may rush over the bridge. Additionally, the strong currents may also be carrying debris that could cause a makeshift dam upstream or damage the structural integrity of the bridge.
Go to the Highest Level of Your Home
You and your family should move to the highest level of your home if there is a flood in your area. If you live in a first-floor apartment or condo, go to a higher floor. Although your attic is the highest room in any home, it is extremely important to stay out of them if there are no windows or exits in your attic. If floodwaters rise high enough to reach your attic, you can become trapped with little to no oxygen.
Straight-Line Winds
3/3/2022 (Permalink)
Recently, parts of West Tennessee were hit hard by several different types of storms. Within two weeks, our area saw several thunderstorms, severe flooding, freezing rain, icy roads, and was under a tornado watch on multiple occasions. However, the last storm that passed through was different!
The primary concern during this particular storm was the straight-line winds that swept through at over 60 mph. A few weeks prior, this area went through intense rainfall that was followed by a sudden freeze. Branches were already weak after enduring the weight from all of the ice, so as these racing winds blew through, many trees could not handle the force of the wind and were knocked down. Fallen power lines covered the roads, and tree limbs covered yards. Many people were without power, experienced water leaks caused by roof damage, and flood damage caused by the intense rain.
SERVPRO of Jackson/Crockett County was on call and equipped to handle the intense wind! With our 24-hour emergency services, we responded to several water losses caused by flash flooding and frozen pipes. We are “Faster to any size disaster,” and are always “Here to help.”
Flood: Watch vs. Warning
2/23/2022 (Permalink)
With the heavy and consistent rain we have seen over the last couple of days, areas of localized flooding have been reported. Flooding is one of the most common disasters from coast-to-coast, and can cause massive amounts of damage to your property. During intense storms, it is important to be mindful of where you are and of road conditions. Although, before we can even get into flood preparation and safety tips, it is important to understand the difference between a flood watch and a flood warning.
Flood Watch
When rain is anticipated for an extended period or a rising storm surge is rolling in, a flood watch is issued. This means that weather conditions could cause flooding. However, a flood watch does not necessarily mean flooding will occur, but that preparations should be made.
Flood Warning
When flooding is inevitable, a flood warning is issued. A floor warning means flooding is expected or signs of flooding have already been reported in your area. Knowing the difference between a flood watch and a flood warning could save your life and help you better prepare your home before the storm hits.
Pool House Pipe Burst
2/10/2022 (Permalink)
Water steadily dripping from wet insulation in the ceiling
When a potentially severe winter storm is predicted to pass through our area, homeowners start preparing their homes for freezing temperatures. Although preparing a pool house for low temperatures isn’t any different from preparing a home, it is easy to forget in all the hustle and bustle! During winter months, pool houses can sometimes become an out-of-site, out-of-mind responsibility. It is not uncommon for SERVPRO of Jackson/Crockett County to receive calls regarding large water damages to pool houses after a severe winter storm.
Recently, we responded to a water call where pipes in the customer’s pool house busted. Unfortunately for the homeowner, the pipes were located in the ceiling, causing water from the busted pipes to flow down from above like a rushing waterfall and onto several stored belongings. Even after the water source was turned off and the contents were removed, insulation from the ceiling concealed the water and continued to drip. SERVPRO was on the scene to remove the remaining wet insulation and prevent any further damage. Our certified SERVPRO technicians extracted the water left behind and were able to restore most of the homeowner’s contents to preloss condition.
Prepping Your Pool House
- Pool House Temp.
- Nights when low temperatures are predicted, keep the thermostat set at 55°F or above in your house and the pool house. Investing in a quality space heater can also be beneficial, but be mindful of how long it has been left on and check it regularly.
- Open Cabinet Doors & Let Faucets Drip
- If your pool house has a bathroom or small kitchen, opening cabinet doors and placing the space heaters in the center of the room can help keep the area warm through the winter storm. Leaving sink faucets on to drip allows water to continually flow through the pipes and can prevent it from freezing.
- Know the Layout of the Pool House
- Understanding the layout and location of the pipes in your pool house can help you determine the best methods for insulating your pipes.
- Location of the Breaker
- In the event of a busted pipe, the faster you can stop the source of the water the better! Familiarizing yourself with the breaker box before a disaster strikes can save you precious time and money!
Ice Dam Dilemmas

Ice Dam Life Cycle
Got An Ice Dam Dilemma?
Over this past week, we were hit hard with a substantial amount of ice and snow! It was beautiful while it lasted, but the storm may have left behind a mess for home and business owners!
A lot of water damages that occur in the winter are due to frozen pipes, but many people don't realize the effects ice dams can have on a home or business as well. Ice dams form when melting snow, caused by heated air, flows down the roof but gets blocked behind still-frozen ice. Once the water is trapped and cannot continue to flow or run into the gutter system, it backflows underneath the shingles on the roof and down into the interior areas of the home or business. To further explain, here is the process, broken down further, in an ice dam life cycle.
Ice Dam Life Cycle:
- Birth
- Heat builds in the attic and warms the roof, except at the eaves.
- Growth
- Snow melts on the warm roof and then freezes on the cold eaves.
- Maturity
- Ice accumulates along the eaves, forming a dam.
- Melted water from the warm roof backs up behind it, flows underneath the shingles, and into the interior areas of the house.
Understanding how ice dams form will help home and business owners better prepare or fix them. Here are some helpful tips on how to prevent ice dams from building up on your roof.
Preventative Ice Dam Tips:
- Tip #1
- Check to make sure the insulation installed in your home or business is at least a R-38 rating.
- Tip #2
- Ensure that the attic remains sealed around the plumbing, wiring, and exhaust fans.
- Tip #3
- Remove debris on and around the vents, soffits, roof, gutters, and downspouts debris to eliminate the blockage of melted runoff snow.
- Tip #4
- Purchase a roof rake to help knock snow off the roof and deter dangerous accumulation.
Call SERVPRO of Jackson/Crockett at 731-423-9944 if you are dealing with the aftermath of last week’s snowstorm! You don’t have to face water damage alone!
We will make your water loss “Like it never even happened.”
Tornadoes Terrorize Tennessee
12/16/2021 (Permalink)
Here in Northwest Tennessee, we are no stranger to severe storms and tornadic weather. However, recent storms have brought more devastation and loss than we have ever seen. A week ago today, tornadoes ripped through the Northwest, leveling towns. Many in our neighboring areas have lost their homes, businesses, church buildings, community centers, vehicles, and sadly, even loved ones. The land is literally scarred with the traces left behind by these tornadoes.
We are continuing to remember all of those whose lives were impacted by this storm, and we are “Here To Help!” The community has come together to support these victims, but there are still a lot of ways we can serve! SERVPRO of Jackson/Crockett County is ready to assist all those in need with our 24/7 Emergency Services!
As previously mentioned, tornadoes and straight-line winds caused severe damage to many homes. With the intense amount of rainfall we received throughout this storm, damaged roofs have created a passageway for water to run down and into the ceilings, walls, hardwood floors, carpet, and insulation. Fallen branches, trees, and loose debris knocked down several power lines as well. Many are currently without power, and will most likely be without power for the next several weeks.
SERVPRO specializes in water mitigation and mold remediation. We are fully equipped to extract intrusive water, and our experienced reconstruction team can help restore the damages as well! Our SERVPRO Professionals are also certified in restoring damaged items such as documents, rugs, and other household belongings.
We are “Faster To Any Size Disaster.” Whatever your need may be, call SERVPRO of Jackson/Crockett County today at 731-423-9944.
Freeze Warnings?
12/2/2021 (Permalink)
After the National Weather Service forecasts for freezing or sub-freezing temperatures, what is the first thing that comes to mind? Here in the south, milk and bread immediately become a top priority! However, before we rush down to the grocery store for milk and bread, we should probably check our pipes!
A freeze or sub-freezing warning is announced in our area when a significant drop in temperature is predicted for an extended period. Not only can freezing temperatures pose a threat to plants, animals, and people, it can also be costly for homeowners. If the pipes in your home are exposed to freezing temperatures, they can burst and cause tremendous water damage.
The extent of precautions taken in the south might be very different from up north. States that experience cooler temperatures, freeze warnings, and snow storms regularly are better equipped and prepared to handle low temperatures and severe winter weather. However, there are things you could do to protect your home from experiencing any damage that is brought on by freezing temperatures.
When a freeze warning is issued, it is important for homeowners to…
- Check The Thermostat
- Setting the temperature of your home to 55°F or above can help prevent your pipes from becoming exposed to the cold. This is a good rule of thumb to follow especially if you are going out of town for several days and leaving your home unattended.
- Check & Insulate Pipes
- An inexpensive way to insulate your pipes at a moment's notice would be to wrap your pipes in heat tape. Heat cables with a thermostat control are also recommended.
- Open Cabinets & Let Your Faucets Drip
- Allow warm air to circulate around your plumbing and pipes by opening the cabinet doors in your bathrooms and your kitchen. Be sure to relocate any cleaning products or household chemicals that children could come in contact with. Letting your faucet drip will create a continual flow of water through your pipes and can also help prevent your pipes from freezing.
- Keep Garage Doors Closed & Interior Doors Open
- Keeping your garage door closed during colder months can shield any water supply lines from exposure to freezing temperatures. In addition, to further circulate warmth throughout your home, keep interior doors open.
When The Unexpected Happens
9/20/2021 (Permalink)
A month ago, many people in our neighboring counties experienced a great deal of devastating loss due to unexpected flooding. All the families whose lives have been changed forever by this tragedy are still weighing heavily on our hearts and minds. Many people are facing a lot of challenges and are still wrestling with what to do next. The water rose so quickly that, within minutes, homes, schools, businesses, and entire neighborhoods were underwater. Vehicles were swept into piles, and homes were completely ripped off their foundations. Not only did people lose all of their possessions, but some lost irreplaceable and precious loved ones as well.
During a situation like this, we can not keep from imagining how a flood disaster would impact our lives and our community. We hope and pray that our community never has to endure such a tragedy, but your family here at SERVPRO wants to remind you that we care about our customers and our community. We are always one phone call away if you ever experience an unexpected disaster or severe water damage.
Tornadoes Are FAR From Logical
3/16/2021 (Permalink)
April Showers bring May flowers. But there is also a chance for there to be a tornado and those flowers will not make it to May to see the beautiful sunshine.
In Northwest Tennessee, we tend to get lots of straight line winds along with favorable conditions for tornadoes. Many people not from here wouldn’t think that to be true, but being a Tennessee Native born and raise I know that to be the case.
Last year my parents neighbors home suffered from tornado damages, while my parents home was left unfazed. Tornadoes are very unpredictable but even less logical when it comes to route of destruction and how one home can suffer so much damage and the next can look like nothing happen.
Growing up one of my favorite movies was Twister and even now I love watching it. I feel like it tries to bring a logical nature to something completely spontaneous. Kind of like SERVPRO we try to bring calm and ease into your life when everything seems to be going wrong. That’s why we stand by “Here to Help.”

The technicians at SERVPRO are all IICRC certified. The Institute of Inspection Cleaning and Restoration Certification (IICRC) sets high-quality standards for restoration companies. Employees at SERVPRO are constantly learning new techniques through e-Classes and certification training.
Advanced Technology
Storm damage restoration is a complex process and requires advanced technology. Choosing a restoration company with the proper tools is crucial to minimizing damage. SERVPRO only uses the best technology and equipment, including water removal machines, moisture exposing tools, and deodorization materials. They have access to equipment housed in over 1,700 franchises and even have designated disaster recovery teams.
Locally Owned and Operated
Locally owned companies are more invested in ensuring communities bounce back after major storms. Their clients aren’t just clients—they’re neighbors, friends, and family. SERVPRO is a nationwide franchise, but each franchise is locally owned. This combination gives home and business owners the best of both worlds: the customer care and localized knowledge that comes with a local company and a large corporation's resources.

Storm damage restoration can be stressful. However, dealing with insurance providers afterward can be even worse. The best storm restoration companies are familiar with all major insurance providers and provide assistance with the claims process.
Showers May Bring Flowers, But Downpours Cause Damages
3/12/2021 (Permalink)
April showers help to bring us the most vibrant May flowers and we are so happy with this change of season.
However, when April showers are more like torrential, relentless downpours we could face a flooded basement and other water damage causing costly repairs. Flooding generally occurs in the springtime as the result of heavy rains that cannot be adequately absorbed by the still thawing earth. Particularly formidable are the flash floods resulting from thunderstorms, swiftly melting snow and ice jams in creeks. Consider if more than one of these circumstances happens at the same time, you have the potential for a catastrophe with flooding waters and raging mudslides.
Homeowners you can take some simple precautions to secure your property and keep your possessions safe.
Elevate: Keep your furnace, water heater, electrical panels above predicted water levels to protect yourself from costly home replacements.
Install check valves: These valves close to prevent the backward flow of liquid and prevent water from backing up into the drains in your home.
Build barriers: Use sandbags to create flood walls to prevent or reduce flow of water into your home.
Waterproof the basement: Use a waterproofing compound to seal the walls of your basement.
Clean: Clean gutters, drains and downspouts for proper water flow.
Purchase flood insurance: Most standard homeowners' and business insurance policies unfortunately do no cover flood damage. In the event of a flood, you would be responsible for covering the full cost of repairs and replacing items damaged.
We provide emergency cleaning and restoration services 24 hours a day, 7 days a week—including all holidays. You can expect an immediate response time, day or night.
What do I do? What do I do?
3/8/2021 (Permalink)
What do I do if I have a pipe burst? What if my roof is leaking but I don’t know where and I am afraid the water is going to damage my floors?
First of all, turn off your water either at the source or the water to the house. Doing this will prevent further damage.
After turning off the water, we recommend getting a plumber in to then fix the source in which the water damage is being caused from.
Once the source of the water is taken care of is when we come in. We can assess the damages and then build a plan to save what we can and then demo or setting equipment can happen.
When coming in to your home or building our main focus is to not cause more damage and to do everything in accordance to our standards while also getting you back “Like it never even happened,” as quickly as possible.
Winter Storm Warning
2/10/2021 (Permalink)
With a Winter Storm Warning set in place for this week, we are preparing for temperatures to be below freezing for multiple days. The weather reporters have been stating there is a potential for ice/freezing rain during the time of the Winter Storm Warning. This could cause power outages in our area. One thing that I hope you have already taken care of is your gutters. Your gutters need to be clear of any and all debris such as but not limited to twigs and leaves. Making sure these are cleared out will help to not cause ice build up and lower the potential for a loss. Low temperatures can be harmful to our homes in so many ways but staying prepared for the possibility of snow or ice can help reduce the possibility of a loss.
We can help you weather the storm
2/4/2021 (Permalink)
When people talk about storms in the South many of us think tornadoes or rain. We don’t tend to think about snow storms or ice storms in our area. Past years have proven that winter storms can happen here. A few years ago we even had ice dams happen on peoples roofs, that was something we had never seen before.
While we have had some cold days, Tennessee has had a very mild winter so far. But as any true Tennessean would know being in the beginning of February winter will last through March. That means those temps can drop out of nowhere and be in the 20s for a couple of days and then next thing we know it will be Spring.
One thing that we of SERVPRO of Jackson/Crockett County want you to remember is that whether it is a snow storm, tornado, or flood we will still be there for you. “Like it never even happened.”
Freeze Storms
12/29/2020 (Permalink)
Storm Damages can range from Tornadoes to Flood Waters to Frozen Pipes even Ice Dams. In Tennessee Frozen Pipes and Ice Dams seem so far from reality but they can and have happen here before. It is possible to happen again.
The signs of winter are upon us, frost on windshields, temperatures dropping. Low temperatures along with uninformed homeowners and tenants are the main causes of frozen pipes.
Here are some tips on how to avoid Frozen Pipes:
- Keep garage doors closed, especially if there are water supply lines in the garage
- Open kitchen and bathroom cabinets doors to allow warmer air to circulate around the plumbing especially if connected to exterior walls
- Let the cold water drip from the faucet. Running water helps prevent freezing pipes
- Keep the thermostat set to the same temperature day and night.
- If you plan to be away during the cold weather, leave your heat on in your home.
- For long term solutions, insulation should be installed in attics, basements, and crawlspaces. Also, seal all cracks and openings around windows and doors.
Always take steps to protect your home for all peril.
What You Should Know About Black Water
4/21/2020 (Permalink)
Immediately after experiencing life-altering flooding in Jackson/Crockett County the first thing you probably want to do is start dealing with the water damage from the flood. Before diving in to the problem it is important to know about the associated dangers of black water.
What is this water and why should it be avoided?
Black water is liquid presumed to house multiple contaminants. It could contain:
• Fecal matter
• Urine
• Used toilet paper
Sewage systems frequently become compromised and leak after water damage, they can pose health threats to those who encounter the dirty liquid.
It’s also important to be aware of gray water. That type often comes from washing machines, dishwashers, sinks and showers and is not immediately as dangerous as the black variety, but can become more hazardous after 48 hours of contact with building surfaces.
How can you stay safe from contaminated water?
The best way to limit your exposure to hazardous water from flooding is to limit your exposure to it. Instead of trying to handle the cleanup process yourself depend on our SERVPRO team to assess the damage and tackle the steps necessary for a thorough restoration of your home.
Black water is a likely contaminant after a flood, and it’s a primary reason why you should not deal with the water damage on your own. Contacting a professional team to assist with damage from flooding gives you greater protection from possible risks and increases the likelihood of positive outcomes.
Call us at (731)423-9944 for more information on mitigating storm damage and how you can be prepared.
Tornadoes After Dark
4/13/2020 (Permalink)
Although the Volunteer state sits outside of the typical Tornado Valley, we know that we have our own little Tornado Valley. We get around 29 tornadoes per year. I don’t feel that this is the most surprising fact I have read. However, the amount of how many touchdowns after dark was alarming. Over 50 percent of the tornadoes we have in Tennessee touchdown after dark. That is the highest in the United States. Now that part is shocking to think about, but once I did think about it I realized that is most likely pretty accurate from what I have noticed in my lifetime.
Tornado damage can be not only stressful but also very hard to predict and prepare for when it comes to protecting your home. After the tornado has passed that’s where we come in. We can help from the disposal of fallen debris to the water damage and storm mitigation to the final touches on your reconstruction. We can help get your family back to normal “Like it never even happened.”
Our goal is to keep you in the loop from beginning to end to make you the most comfortable even during the most uncertain of times.
Tornado Drill Day
3/25/2020 (Permalink)
If anyone is like me, I got so tired of tornado drills in school. I never understood why we had to sit out in the hallways on our knees with our heads down. Now that I am older I realize they were just trying to keep us safe for the possibility of a disaster. We at SERVPRO of Jackson/Crockett County suggest you do a Tornado Drill at your home or business at least once a year. This keeps it fresh for everyone. You need to know where to go in case your ever need to get to a safe spot quickly.
- Seek a small interior room or hallway on the lowest floor possible.
- Stay away from doors, windows, and outside walls

It's just a little storm damage.
3/25/2020 (Permalink)
Have you heard a neighbor or friend say, “Oh, it’s just a little bit of storm damage. That’s not a lot of water. It’s fine.” They aren’t the “mold experts” and most people don’t even actually understand mold.
Most of the time when you talk about storm damage, you are talking about the roof or the trauma to the exterior of the structure, may it be your home or business. Storm damage can cause mold as well. Bare with me, I know that sounds crazy but a small about of moisture can cause mold to grow and spread. Since mold is in the air in the form of spores when storms cause damage to homes it is likely for the spores to enter our homes and multiply into colonies. This is why it is super important to make sure that any damage caused by a storm is properly acknowledged by a professional. Here at SERVPRO of Jackson/Crockett County that’s exactly what we are. We are a local mold and remediation specialists that can examine and check your exact situation to see if you have mold or a perfect situation for possible mold growth. We take every job seriously no mater the size.

Staying Safe in the Aftermath of a Storm
3/27/2018 (Permalink)
Like it or not, tornado season is nearly upon us! We want you to be prepared if the unexpected happens. While there is loss of life that occurs during a storm, many lives are also lost in the aftermath of a storm. Here’s a few tips on how to stay safe after the storm passes.
- Tip #1: Tornadoes often strike when you least expect it. Be sure you have a designated meeting place to reconnect with loved ones in case you get separated during the storm.
- Tip #2: Be sure to keep your driver’s license or some kind of photo identification on you. This will make it easier to access your home through security checkpoints that are often established in the harder hit areas.
- Tip #3: Always keep your shoes on. Tornadoes leave bent pieces of metal, screws and many other debris that could easily cut you. Try to keep your shoes on in the aftermath.

Don’t Forget Your Pets!
3/13/2018 (Permalink)
Like it or not, tornado season is nearly upon us! We want you to be prepared if the unexpected happens. Often times we do really well preparing ourselves and our home, but we forget our four-legged members of the family. So here are some tips to keep these precious angels safe and secure.
- Tip #1: Remember to have food and water in your storm shelter for your pets as well. If you have a cat, don’t forget that litter box in case you’re stuck for a few days.
- Tip #2: If you have a high anxiety pet you might want to consult a veterinarian about the best way to make them feel comfortable. Alternatively, a thunder jacket works well for most dogs and can be found at most pet retail stores or on Amazon.
- Tip #3: Be sure to have a kennel setup in your storm shelter to give your dog or cat a safe place to hide. If you do venture out after the storm, be sure to keep your dog on a leash. It’s easy for them to get scared or lost in the aftermath of a storm.

Emergency Preparedness Kits – Vital Tools During Tornado Season
3/6/2018 (Permalink)
Like it or not, tornado season is nearly upon us! We want you to be prepared if the unexpected happens. A valuable tool in preparing for tornado can be an emergency preparedness kit. Stocked with flashlights, tools, NOAA weather alert radio, water, food and more; having an emergency preparedness kit can make all the difference if you’re trapped in your storm shelter without access to emergency supplies.
Here are a few top items that should go into an Emergency Preparedness Kit:
- When a tornado strikes, first responders are often inundated with requests for help, so you have to be prepared to survive for a short time on your own. A good basic kit has food and water supplies for at least 72 hours.
- You should have a battery powered or hand crank radio and a NOAA weather alert radio that will alert you of an approaching tornado and keep you informed after the storm.
- Be sure to have basic first aid supplies such as bandages and hydrogen peroxide to clean minor wounds.
For a full list and to assemble your own kit, be sure to visit: https://www.ready.gov/build-a-kit

SERVPRO® team departs for Florida to participate in Hurricane Irma recovery efforts
9/14/2017 (Permalink)
Taylor Callens, Eunice Mack, Stan Nunley, Darrell Lowery and John David from left to right.
SERVPRO® of Dyersburg/Union City, SERVPRO® of Weakley/Gibson/Carroll Counties and SERVPRO® of Jackson/Crockett County announced, it has partnered with SERVPRO® Storm Team Wilson from Birmingham, Alabama, and SERVPRO® Corporate to help in Hurricane Irma recovery efforts.
“Since we started hearing about Irma being created in the warm waters of the Caribbean Sea, we began our preparations; asking among our team members who would volunteer to assist in Florida after the hurricane.” said David Caldwell, owner of SERVPRO® of the three franchises.
“In 2012, we went to help people in New Jersey affected by hurricane Sandy. We know the devastation that it causes to homes, businesses and communities. We knew that a powerful hurricane was coming, actually the most intense Atlantic hurricane to strike the United States since Katrina in 2005. We wanted to be there and help.”
The morning of September 12th, five members of the three SERVPRO® franchises left the Newbern and Jackson offices to join the recovery efforts for about 15 days. John David Caldwell, Taylor Callens, Eunice Mack, Stan Nunley, and Darrell Lowery plan to do restoration extractions flood water, drying structures and treating for mold depending on needs.
They know the conditions will not be optimal. Most probably they will not have electricity or running water, but they are committed to do their job to the best of their abilities in order to give back to Floridians their homes almost as “Like it never even happened".
