A real public servant

He is a Twitter lover (@brumley95) and a hardcore public servant. Recently, thanks to the American Red Cross of Mid-West Tennessee, we met Dave Brumley, a key volunteer who has offered his time to that organization for more than 15 years. This past month of September, he was selected as a Jefferson Award Foundation honoree, a nationwide award that represents the best of public service.
Brumley is part of the Disaster Action Team (DAT). He is also the Red Cross representative to the Armed Forces, and the Government Operations Liaison. This 75-year-old retiree used to work for the print department at the Fred’s department store in Memphis. “Pretty much all my life I have been involved in some organization that helps folks. When we moved to Jackson in 2000, I was looking for something to get involved in and a friend of mine was involved in the Red Cross […]. The rest is history!”, said Mr. Brumley.
Dave has assisted in several disasters throughout the country such as the Chattanooga tornado, the wildfires in Gatlinburg and even in Hurricane Katrina. “I was working at a hurricane in Florida several years ago and we were doing mobile feeding out of our Emergency Response for people at a trailer park that had been devastated by the event. There was an elderly gentleman who came up to the truck to get some food and, as we always do, we ask how are they coping and he just broke in and started crying. We tried to comfort him, offer him hope. This is one of the things that stays in my mind”.
